Charles Rennie Mackintosh


Here is the painting at an early stage. How cold and bright it was that winter. When we came in the front door into a small lobby area, I seem to remember we were presented with a choice of 4 doors - all of the same shape, size and design. Finding the room you wanted was a guessing game.


This sitting room was on the corner of the building, so from one window we could catch a glimpse of the river; from the other, Comrie's main street and the old man with the newspaper and walking stick. He always gave us a friendly wave - two strangers in the town - even when we were about two or three hundred yards away.
